Pilot Paul called to chat about his current airline going out of business, losing his job, and how he bounced back quickly. We talked about his dreams of becoming a pilot ever since attending an air show in Bangor, Maine when he was a child. We discussed homophobia in the cockpit, why he had to take a job as a flight attendant, and how the experience of working as a flight attendant helped him be a better pilot.

It's PILOT WEEK on Grounded with Flight Attendant Joe.
Commercial airline pilots, Marissa and Adam, called in to discuss the impact that COVID-19 is having on the airline industry.
Part one: Marissa and I discussed the challenges of being a single mother of three, an airline pilot, and how she prioritizes what's most important in her life. We also discussed how her airline management is handling the situation. misogyny in the flight deck, and why airline passengers were told to quarantine after flying on certain flights, but pilots and flight attendants were told to get right back on the airplane fly another flight.

Part two: Adam is one of my best friends and I had this awesome opportunity to pop his podcast cherry. Trust me, I'm sure he's still walking funny. Adam and I chatted about our expectations during the pandemic, how airline management is handling the situation, and how he manages his stress level during this unknown time. We also talked about how important it is to have a backup plan in life. Nothing is guaranteed and even when you think your life and job are going perfectly, something can come along and pull the rug out from under you. What's your backup plan? What would you do if your career suddenly ended? You better think about it seriously, but anything is possible.

Flight attendants, LJ and Kurtis, called in today to discuss flying during the COVID-19 pandemic. I am currently off for six months, but I wanted to do a temperature check on what it's like on the line. We discussed how the pandemic had affected their work schedules and their fears of being considered essential workers. We talked about passengers flying during this time, airline management, and what they think about furloughs. We laughed and also chatted about inappropriate topics to lighten the mood. I think it's essential to joke and laugh during times of crisis, and LJ and Kurtis both delivered.

Air traffic controller, Garon Wade, called in to chat about adoption. Garon's story is incredible. Garon was born in Sri Lanka and adopted by an American family. Adoption is an important part of Garon's narrative. His adopted father was adopted, Garon was adopted, and Garon and his husband have adopted two children, one from the United States and one from South Africa. He educated me on the adoption process when adopting children in the states and from a foreign country.
We also discussed racist relatives, citizens of the United States who don't have passports, living abroad, and how the words that parents use around their children can influence their child in a negative way.

Mike Wagner is a powerhouse when it comes to lyric writing and creating music. Mike is the "Weird Al" of the pilot world. With parody songs titled: Chemtrails At Night, Lav Stinks, and I Sit Around, Mike is a legend in the airline industry. We chatted about his love for creating music, conspiracy theorists, and the differences between corporate pilots and commercial pilots. We also shared why we think some pilots are cheap and wrapped the episode up with some golf talk.

We discussed the racial disparity in the judicial system, slavery and religion, and the differences between raising black boys and white boys in America. We shared a similar story about being pulled over by the police and how the outcome was completely different. Was it because of the color of our skin? I'll let you decide.

A few weeks ago, my husband and I were discussing what it must be like to deal with a pandemic while juggling the needs of children. I reached out to three families that I know personally and proceeded to dig deep into their business to understand what it's like parenting during a pandemic. We discussed anxiety levels, maintaining routines and schedules, homeschooling, and how they--and their children--are staying sane during this crisis.

Stephanie Sutherlin is a blogger who lives in the Pacific Northwest on a sailboat. She's also a wedding photographer, YouTuber, ex flight attendant, future pilot, and writer. Did I mention she's also writing a pre-teen novel?
Stephanie makes me look like a lazy bum.
I loved this conversation. This was the first time I had ever spoken with Stephanie, so I was eager to dive deep into her story. By the end of it, I almost paid her for a therapy session. After bombarding Stephanie with questions about living on a sailboat, the conversation went into overdrive. Stephanie shared her history of how fear has controlled every aspect of her life. How do you take back your life when fear runs it? Stephanie will tell you. Stephanie also talked about her past life as a flight attendant and how she came to the decision to move ahead with a career in pilot aviation.
